I’ll admit that I’m pretty terrible at keeping this site as up-to-date as I would like. However, I realize that I’m in control of that, so it’s up to me to fix that. That being said, I’ve decided to revamp the design of the site and make it easier to navigate.
So what have I been up to? Recording. I actually haven’t stopped recording since I released #ALLin last April. I really like how the new album is shaping up and I can’t wait to share it with you.
Anyone who knows me, knows I love listening to older music. Don’t get me wrong, I check out new music too, but there is something about music of the past that really energizes me. If you were to look at my playlists, you wouldn’t find any of my old songs on them. Not that you necessarily should, but I rarely listen to my old stuff. Why? Because I’m a perfectionist, and I always feel I can do better…
But after a rare listen to an older album of mine - Me, Myself, and I, I spent less time critiquing what I could have done better, and more time enjoying the feeling the music brought me. Listening to that album brought back all the memories behind each song during a really fun time in my life.
That album marked the first time I was nominated for an Ohio Hip-Hop Award for the category of Best Album. I can remember attending the Ohio Hip-Hop Awards and thinking, “There is no chance I win this thing.” I didn’t lack confidence in my ability, I just figured that I was unknown to the audience and had a very slim chance of winning. Well, a slim chance is all I needed because I ended up winning.
As I walked to the stage to accept the award, there wasn’t a cheer in the building, just silence and a room full of confused guests. “Who is DJ $crilla?” might as well have been tattooed across everyone’s forehead, but that didn’t matter to me. I was happy, and that’s all that mattered.
Listening to Me, Myself, and I took me on a trip down memory lane, and it also sparked the title for my forthcoming album -- We, Ourselves, and Us. This new album isn’t a continuation of my previous album, but a refreshing contrast to it. If Me, Myself, and I is the yin, We, Ourselves, and Us is the yang. So why title this new album this way? Making this album reminds me of the same feeling I had when making Me, Myself, and I.
I look forward to sharing more with you about my new album, so get ready for We, Ourselves, and Us.
